One of the quirky results of having a twin-television setup in my Man Cave is random parallels between the two screens. The frequent synchronicity is quite often startling, and also humorous or just plain cool.
The photo above (click image to see full-size photo) is a recent example of this phenomenon. I was watching MLB TV on the smaller screen on the left, with the Cardinals game being featured on the primary (flat HD) screen on the right. The A’s were using rookie relief pitcher Sean Doolittle to close out a …

The date of 10.27.11 instantly reached legendary status for St. Louis Cardinals baseball fans. In fact, the heroics of David Freese seem to emerge in some form at least once per day around the St. Louis area.
Every time I see highlights of Freese’s improbable, clutch, two-out, two-strike ninth-inning triple and his game-winning home run at 11:39 CT in the bottom of the 11th inning in Game 6 of the 2011 World Series, I think of one thing: Texas outfielder Josh Hamilton.
Hamilton’s life story is mind-boggling, and his travails during the …

Since my job lay-off in March of 2009, I have experienced numerous inquiries ranging from sincere empathy to casual questions regarding what my future plans are.
Of course, those first few months of unemployment were the most difficult, and, to some extent, worthy of some degree of compassion. But only because I had an eight-month-old baby at home when I lost my job, and I actually had really loved my position with Emmis Communications as Digital Brand Manager.
The fact that I was/am still young and very capable of working at an …

I am not prone to be melodramatic, except for when I endure a particularly painful sports defeat. But what I experienced last weekend is challenging to describe without being a little sensational.
This is a very condensed version of a lengthy tale, but that is the point of a blog post. If I decide to write a book, I’ll let you know the details. I grew up in love with playing basketball from as far back as I can remember. The fact that I was really good at it helped, but …

The last time that St. Louis had a real professional basketball team was in 1976. What a Leap Year it was! Bob Costas made his broadcasting debut in STL, the Spirits of St. Louis put their unique stamp on pro hoops history before the ABA-NBA merger, Star Wars came out, the Olympics went down in Canada, we had Jimmy Carter and Patti Hearst in the news, The Last Waltz went down, punk rock was emerging, … the beginning of Apple … and my wife was born.
A really, really, really good …

When Landon Donovan scored in the 91st minute to defeat Algeria, 1-0, and allow the USA to advance into the final 16 in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, it not only represented a personal all-time soccer moment for me but was one of those moments that I am likely to always remember.
I was very fortunate to be able to watch this entire match, and one thing that is undeniable about soccer is that the style of play and the format of the World Cup allows tension to build to nearly …

As fun as it is to play basketball, it is very physically challenging – and so I treat it as a full-fledged workout, as I should at my age. I make sure to handle the obvious; I stretch before playing, make sure to eat and drink plenty of fluids and avoid playing in pick-up games that may result in a heart attack. The idea is to get a good workout and be wise while staying out of the hospital – and avoid dealing with our health care system.
Whether it is …

The fact that I will be on the radio speaking live about the NBA this Saturday is quite an interesting development. It feels good, and also feels like the natural culmination of so many paths that inevitably should land at this collective destination. It seems I have two options: waste time being worried about something going wrong, or just go with the flow of the show and have a great time doing what I want to do.
I’ll choose the latter. Ample preparation combined with enthusiasm, good content, interviews and analysis …

When one is trying to cover all of the social media bases available for self-promotion, it can be kind of daunting. Promoting myself is an unnatural thing for me to do, yet I have plenty of reason to do so – and it is necessary as I prepare to launch my NBA radio talk show, called At the Buzzer on Team 1380.
The show is official and will begin on Saturday, April 24th from 6pm to 7pm on Team 1380 AM in the St. Louis market. It is the only NBA-themed …

The short-term future that I see is much less murky than the long-term, yet each brings with it an impressive degree of cloudiness with just enough clarity to firm up this mix of perception, hope, desire and reality. Not to be overly cryptic, but I feel that I am facing an axis, a spinning wheel of personal evolution that will obviously lead me to the inevitable future – but what lies beyond today has much more of a mysterious overtone than the cozy, comfortable tones one wants to be accustomed …
